Newcastle sign Benfica defender Amar Dedić
Newcastle have completed the signing of defender Amar Dedić from Benfica, with the move confirmed on 17 August 2026.
The Bosnian featured regularly for Benfica across last season, making 43 competitive appearances and totalling 3,075 minutes as he contributed to their Primeira Liga and UEFA Champions League campaigns.
A season of regular involvement
Dedić's workload at Benfica was spread across several competitions. He made 24 appearances in the Primeira Liga, amassing 1,911 minutes, and added 14 outings and 1,164 minutes in the Champions League, underlining his standing as a reliable option in defence.
He also featured in domestic cup competitions, appearing three times in the Taça de Portugal and once each in the Taça da Liga and Super Cup, though he did not take to the pitch in those particular fixtures. Across all competitions in 2025 he scored once.
What it means for Newcastle
The arrival gives Newcastle another option at the back as they continue to build their squad in the early weeks of the season. Dedić's experience of high-level European football, gained through his Champions League minutes with Benfica, could prove useful as Newcastle balance domestic and continental commitments.
