Matthew Targett joins Hull City as free agent
Hull City have completed the free signing of defender Matthew Targett from Newcastle, with the move confirmed on 22 July 2026.
The transfer arrives as Championship and Premier League clubs put the finishing touches to their squads ahead of the new season, with pre-season preparations well under way.
A busy campaign in 2025
Targett was a near-ever-present figure last season, racking up 46 competitive appearances and 3,758 minutes on the pitch while contributing four goals.
The bulk of that workload came in the Championship, where he made 45 appearances totalling 3,672 minutes, with a further outing of 86 minutes coming in the FA Cup.
What it means for Hull City
Signing a defender with that volume of recent game time gives Hull City an experienced option to call upon as they build their squad for the campaign ahead.
With the transfer window still open, the club will be hopeful that Targett's arrival on a free deal proves to be shrewd business as pre-season preparations continue.
