Liverpool host Villarreal with Champions League momentum on their side
Liverpool return to Anfield on 20 October to face Villarreal in matchday three of the Champions League league stage, a meeting between two sides who have found a rich vein of recent form.
Liverpool arrive having won four of their last five matches, while Villarreal have claimed three wins in their own five, with form that includes just a single defeat for each side over that run.
A history that favours the hosts
The two clubs have met four times before, twice in the Champions League and twice in the Europa League, and Liverpool have won three of those four encounters. Their two previous European Cup meetings, both in 2022, ended in Liverpool's favour — a 3-2 away win in Villarreal followed by a 2-0 victory at Anfield.
Villarreal's only win in the pairing came a Europa League tie in April 2016, before Liverpool responded with a 3-0 victory of their own in the return leg the following week.
With both teams showing good recent form heading into matchday three, this latest instalment adds another chapter to a fixture that has rarely failed to produce goals and twists when these two clubs have met in Europe.
