Deportivo La Coruna welcome Elche to the Estadio Municipal de Riazor on 17 August for the opening round of La Liga, a fixture that returns the two Galician-tinged rivals to the top flight after their recent meetings were played out in Segunda División.

Form and recent history

Deportivo La Coruna go into the match with the slightly better recent record of the two, having won two and drawn three of their last five, without defeat. Elche have been unbeaten too, though with just the one win in their last five alongside four draws.

The pair have met five times since 2019, none of those games ending in defeat for Elche. The most recent encounter, in June 2025, saw Elche win 4-0 away from home, while the previous meeting in October 2024 finished goalless. Deportivo La Coruna's sole win in the sequence came in June 2020, a 1-0 success in Elche, and the two sides also drew 0-0 in June 2019. Elche won 3-1 at Riazor in November 2019.

What is at stake

With both clubs returning to La Liga, this opening fixture offers an early marker for the season ahead. Deportivo La Coruna will look to make home advantage count at Riazor, while Elche will point to their unbeaten recent run and a head-to-head record that has favoured them in three of the last five meetings.
