Balerdi joins Roma from Marseille on loan
AS Roma have strengthened their defensive options with the loan signing of Leonardo Balerdi from Marseille, the move confirmed on 29 August 2026.
The Argentine centre-back arrives in Serie A having been a regular fixture for Marseille throughout 2025, a season in which he made 36 competitive appearances across all competitions.
A busy year in France
Balerdi's 2025 campaign saw him log 2,860 minutes for Marseille, the bulk of it coming in Ligue 1 where he featured 26 times for 1,998 minutes. He also contributed to the club's European campaign, making six appearances and playing 495 minutes in the UEFA Champions League.
His involvement extended to domestic cup competitions too, with three outings in the Coupe de France and a further appearance in the Trophée des Champions. Across the year he scored once.
What it means for Roma
With Balerdi now on loan in the Italian capital, Roma add a defender with a substantial workload behind him and recent experience at both domestic and continental level. His arrival gives the club another option at centre-back as the early rounds of the season unfold.
