Atletico Madrid open their home account for the new La Liga campaign against Villarreal at the Metropolitano Stadium, with matchday two offering an early chance to settle the memory of their last meeting. That fixture, played in May, ended in a 5-1 rout for Villarreal, the heaviest of the sides' recent encounters and one that still looms over this reunion.

Form and recent history

Atletico arrive with three wins from their last five outings, a record shaped by two defeats but topped off with a victory in their most recent match. Villarreal's sequence reads differently, built on draws either side of two wins and a single loss, leaving them with slightly fewer victories than their hosts across the same run.

The two clubs have met five times since April 2024, with Atletico winning twice, Villarreal once, and two matches drawn. Beyond May's 5-1 scoreline, the pattern has largely been tight, including a 2-2 draw and a 1-1 stalemate, making last season's finale something of an outlier in an otherwise closely fought rivalry.

What is at stake

With the season only two matchdays old, neither side has established a clear pattern of form, but Atletico will be keen to show that May's result was not a sign of things to come. Villarreal, for their part, will look to their recent draws and wins as evidence they can trouble a team that has generally had the better of this fixture in Madrid.
